Parkersburg Bicycle Receives National Recognition
We are thrilled to announce that the League of American Bicyclists has named Parkersburg Bicycle as a Bicycle Friendly Business. Parkersburg Bicycle is the first business in West Virginia to receive this designation. The LAB's Bicycle Friendly Business program recognizes businesses that go the extra mile to help people use their bikes for transportation and help employees commute by providing services such as secure bike parking.
I'm personally excited about this designation because I'm heavily involved in bike advocacy in West Virginia. Did you know that in 2008, the LAB rated West Virginia the most hostile state in the nation towards cyclists? This upset quite a few of us from around the state so we got together and formed a group known as Bike WV. We held a meeting in the Governor’s Mansion and Civic Center in Charleston, complete with the heads of the LAB and the Alliance for Biking and Walking. We started working together to change things.
In 2009, West Virginia moved up in the rankings to 42nd! Folks all over are working together to make West Virginia easier and safer to cycle in. Parkersburg Bicycle is no exception. From providing educational classes to supporting bicycle commuters, everyone here at Parkersburg Bicycle wants to do their part to help West Virginia keep moving up in the rankings. I am so proud to be working for the first ever business in WV to receive this designation and am looking for many more to follow our lead!
