May is National Bike Month. What a great time to get back on your bike or encourage others to ride. It's also a great time to try commuting to work by bike. Too often overlooked and underrated, the bicycle is the simplest and most pleasure inducing way to get healthier while saving our environment and reconnecting with our community in a positive way.
Does riding to work seem too cumbersome or just not practical? If you fear you're out of shape, start out riding at an easy pace. In a few months you will be in great shape. Practice your route on a weekend to find the easiest way to work. Worried that it will take too long? According to the League of American Bicyclists, trips of less than three miles will be quicker by bike, and trips of five to seven miles in urban areas may take the same time or less as by car. The average commuter travels at 10 mph, according to the League. The more you ride, the faster you will become.
Want more information from the League on commuting by bike? Visit their Web site and download the Bike to Work Commuter's Booklet. It's full of excellent tips, resources and strategies for bike commuting.
