The League of American Bicyclists held the 10th National Bike Summit in Washington, D.C., March 9-11. Parkersburg Bicycle employee Kim Broughton was there, having received a scholarship to attend from the International Mountain Bike Association and the West Virginia Cycling Foundation. Kim serves as a member of IMBA's Mid-Atlantic Regional Leadership Advisory Council. During the summit, Kim and three other West Virginia representatives visited every WV Congressman and Senator, asking for support of bicycling as transportation as well as continued support for trail systems. Over 400 summit participants visited their representatives as well. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood energized and thanked the crowd during an exciting speech at the summit. Soonafter, on his blog, LaHood declared, "Today, I want to announce a sea change. People across America who value
bicycling should have a voice when it comes to transportation planning.
This is the end of favoring motorized transportation at the
expense of non-motorized." To read more about the summit and LaHood's announcement, visit the LAB Web site.
